How to stream GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox with OBS

GTA 6 comes out on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Your PC does not run the game: it receives the picture from the console and OBS adds your overlay, webcam and alerts. There are three ways to get the console into OBS, from free to best quality.

Updated November 2, 2026

1.The three ways to bring the console into OBS

Pick one according to your budget and how often you stream. You can start with the free one and move to a capture card later: your OBS scenes stay the same, only the source changes.

  • Capture card: the cleanest picture and no delay for you. A 1080p60 card is enough for Twitch.
  • PS Remote Play (PS5) or the Xbox app (Xbox): free, the console streams to your PC over your home network. The picture is compressed and a little behind.
  • Broadcast straight from the console: no PC, but no overlay, no alerts, no webcam frame.

2.Method 1: a capture card

Console HDMI out to the card HDMI in, card HDMI out (passthrough) to your TV or monitor, card to the PC over USB 3 or PCIe. You play on the passthrough screen with no delay, OBS gets the copy.

In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source, pick the card, 1920 x 1080 and 60 FPS. On PS5, turn HDCP off (Settings, System, HDMI) or the card shows a black screen. Turn HDR off on both consoles for your stream sessions: HDR looks grey and washed out once captured.

If your card does not pass 120 Hz through, set the console to 60 Hz (PS5: Screen and Video, Video Output; Xbox: General, TV and display options). The full cabling is in our capture card guide.

3.Method 2: PS Remote Play on PS5

Free and good enough to test your setup or stream from time to time. Plug both the PS5 and the PC into your router with a cable: over Wi-Fi the picture breaks up as soon as the city gets busy.

  • On the PS5: Settings, System, Remote Play, turn Enable Remote Play on.
  • On the PC: install the PS Remote Play app from the PlayStation website, sign in with the same PlayStation account, set the video quality to 1080p in the app settings.
  • In OBS: a Window Capture source on the Remote Play window (capture method Windows 10 1903 and up), and an Application Audio Capture source on the same app for the game sound.
  • If the window stays black in OBS, switch the capture method, or run OBS and the app on the same graphics card.

4.Method 3: the Xbox app on PC

Same idea for Xbox Series X|S. The picture is compressed like with Remote Play, so keep it for testing or for a light setup.

  • On the Xbox: Settings, Devices and connections, Remote features, turn remote features on, and set the power mode to Sleep so the PC can wake the console.
  • On the PC: open the Xbox app, select your console and start remote play on this device.
  • In OBS: Window Capture on the Xbox app window and Application Audio Capture on the app, exactly like the PS5 method.

5.Sound: game, mic and party chat

Your voice must reach OBS, so use a mic plugged into the PC, not a headset plugged into the controller: a controller headset sends your voice to the console only, your viewers never hear it.

With a capture card, the game sound comes through the card (audio of the Video Capture Device source). Plug your headphones into the TV or the audio out of the card to hear the game without delay. Party chat from the console is mixed into the game sound: warn your friends they are on stream.

6.Which method to pick

Streaming once a week to see if you like it: Remote Play or the Xbox app, zero cost. Streaming several times a week: a 1080p60 capture card, the gain in sharpness is visible on every fast car chase. No PC at all: the console broadcast works, but your stream will look like everyone else's.

Once the picture is in OBS, all that is left is dressing it up: our GTA 6 packs sit on top in a few minutes, and the rest of the preparation is in the GTA 6 section.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stream GTA 6 from a PC?

Not by playing on PC: at release on 19 November 2026, GTA 6 is announced on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. The PC is used to receive the console picture and run OBS or Streamlabs.

Do I need a capture card to stream GTA 6?

No. PS Remote Play and the Xbox app are enough to start, for free. A capture card gives a sharper picture and no delay for you, which is what we recommend if you stream often.

Why does my capture card show a black screen with the PS5?

HDCP is on. On the PS5, go to Settings, System, HDMI and turn Enable HDCP off. Xbox Series consoles do not block games this way.

Can I add an overlay when I stream straight from the console?

No. The built in broadcast of the PS5 and the Xbox sends the game and your camera, without overlay, alerts or browser sources. For those you need OBS or Streamlabs on a PC.
